Julie and Julia was one of the cutest movies I have ever seen. While the story in truth was rather boring to begin with, they managed to make it interesting with fun, bright characters, a great script, and all-in-all fantastic acting. It's the story of two Julies: One a cheerful famed chef in Paris, and the other fifty years in the future, working a dead-end job and feeling something lacking in life. While the first is working against the odds to publish a cookbook and become the first cooking show host on television, the second is working against the odds to cook her way through the first Julia's cookbook in a year- five hundred and so many recipes in only 365 days. And she would write a blog about it, entering daily the recipes she had cooked, how many left to go, her progress in general, and some tidbits about her life that are connected to the cooking experiment. Sounds boring, correct? But no. Incorporating humor and a surprising effect of romance, you can really and truly delve into the characters without getting too deeply emotional to skip over all the fun with lobsters and Julia Child being the only woman, and a loud, bustling, cheerful one at that, in her field. It's an adorable movie, and I think you'll have fun watching the Julias work towards their dreams.
The local library held a mini-convention a week or two ago, and my friends and I were, of course, ECSTATIC. We all dressed up in simple, homemade cosplays, Pokemon, and went down. Mine was least conspicuous, kind of just color coded green for Leafeon, since I still had my folks to convince. Emily's mom is easygoing, so she bought a few materials. Andrea's mom is totally acceptant of this by now and helped her make her entire costume by hand, which was pretty amazing. There were so many people we didn't know were into anime and manga at the con, and we made lots of new buddies that I'm planning to look up and get into contact with again soon. that's one thing about conventions. They're not just nerds sitting in circles laughing because a robot got punched in the face; they're people having fun talking about interesting things that American shows don't even cover. They help people ion creative and imaginative thinking, and they also help make permanent connections. No doctor soap opera can introduce me to another Namine cosplayer like me. No way. So Namine and I were BFFs through the evening, and she is one of the others I'm looking up. e also made friends with the leader of a special manga fangroup at a different local high school, and she was fantastic. Everyone was really friendly and most all of them hilarious, as is the norm at conventions. People there are just amazing. It's too bad other people can't understand that, but hey, it's their loss. So she and i played DDR, we made candy and laughed and joked around and ate, we made a couple skits and had this huge dance contest with the biggest anime theme song in the history of fangirlism. We also had someone come in and talk to us about cosplaying, which really got us all thinking. Andrea and Emily won an award for their cosplays, as did the high school group leader and her group; they all dressed from the same anime, and everyone knows a cosplay will be stronger among a group. And the night was a roaring success =)
So I met an awesome dude at school =) his name is not to be discussed, and nor should it ever be unless necessary (Meaning unless in ten years I move in with him and we get a cat and/or child). He's in plenty of classes and we have a lot of fun together people get to nagging us about dating, which they KNOW I don't do, but they ignore me and so I will ignore them. For now. But anyway, we have a blast together. Two issues: I am defying girl code, as this guy is a friend's ex. But they're good now, so I suppose this law is moot. Still, it can be awkward, since the girl is so dang SENSITIVE to EVERYTHING! But I rest my case here. Second issue: we're running low on things to talk about. We're fine when there's something current we have in common, like a project or an opinion in common, but we can only go so far with that and after the conversations are over there is never another picked up immediately; only awkward silences follow, and then we start up a completely random subject that will die in only a few words. Luckily, we're usually saved by one excuse or another. But what happens when we don't get saved? What happens when we're stuck together ad he realizes what an utterly dull person I really am?
But whatever. I'm going to try not to care =) let's just let it go as it goes, huh?
Yeah. Right.
Christmas began around the same time it always does in our house, which is just a week or two after Thanksgiving. First we put the decorations up. A few snowmen here and there, a wreath on the door, BAM, we're Christmafied (Wow I'm such a dork). Then comes the tree. Everyone pulls out old ornaments and exclaims over them and tries to remember any special little tidbit about each one, which is the only reason why the process takes so long. For the first half it's usually just arguing, but after a while the mood really sets in and we get comfortable. After that it's pretty fun as we tell stories about each ornament and push each other around and sing along with the mix Christmas CDs my mom makes. So that's always fun. Then comes the shopping, which is always a pain to me. UNTIL, of course, I find the perfect gift. Maybe it's just the nerd in me, but i get a sort of a rush in finding a great present for someone, knowing they'll like it, and I get excited as I imagine handing it to them and watching them open it. It's so stupid, I know, but I love it. It's one of the many reasons why this is my favorite holiday. So I got all the presents and they were just wrapped today. Well, they have been BEING wrapped for quite some time now, I just do them all over the course of a week or so, however long. So I finished today with my mom's, which i think is a pretty good one. the best ones, however, would be my dad's a little sister's presents. Those are the best. the others are pretty great, too, though! =)
Then comes the Christmas cookies, though those are yet to come!!!!!!
So we're planning. One, my friends and I are planning cosplays. We still haven't really gotten too deeply into it, but we have given it some more thought than before since the library's mini- con. Two, my family and I are planning to FINALLY finish the finishing of our basement. It's going to be pretty dang cool, and I am generally excited.
That's all I've got for you for now, I'll try and write more often, because things are FINALLY getting a little more exciting around here =)
For now, ttyl!!!!
